Homework 6 Blog

The Surrealist style appeals to me.

These are two paintings by Rene Magritte (1898-1967), one of the most famous Surrealist painters. Magritte's paintings challenge what we take for granted in the world. He played with ideas we associate with real objects and images of them and loved to mess with our expectations.

The image above is titled "Blanc Seing" which is literally translated "Blank Signature" having the connotations of a blank check that you sign and do with as you will. It is in a private collection.

The image above is titled "Lost Jockey" and was was a critical milestone in his entry into Surrealism. It was not well received, and the poor reviews he received were the main reason that he left Brussels in the late 1920's, and moved to Paris. While in Paris, he became involved with other surrealistic artists.
